Electric unicycle will not charge to 100%

A wheel that stops at 80 or 90 percent usually has one weak cell group, not a dead battery. Here is how to narrow it down before you book.

1. Rule out the charger

  • Does the charger light change from red to green when you plug it into the wheel? If it stays green from the start, the charger is not charging.
  • If you have a second charger of the same voltage, try it. Chargers are voltage-specific: never use one from a different wheel.
  • Look at the charge port: black marks, melted plastic or a loose pin mean the port needs replacing, and you should stop fast charging until it is.

2. Read the packs in the app

Many wheels show the voltage of each pack. Packs that differ by more than a small amount after a full charge, or one that drops faster on a ride, point to a weak pack or a failing BMS.

3. Why it stops at 80%

The BMS stops charging when any cell group reaches full. If one group has lost capacity, it fills first and holds the rest of the pack below full. The wheel shows 80 or 90 percent, and the range drops with it.

4. Stop and text us if

  • A side panel is swollen, hot or smells.
  • The wheel got wet and now will not charge.
  • The charge port sparked or melted.

Do not charge it again. Put it outside, away from the house.

When it is a bench job

We test every pack group by group under load, check the BMS, the charger and the port, and replace only what failed — usually one pack or one BMS, not the whole battery.

Tried all of that?

Then the fault is inside the wheel. We pick it up anywhere in Southern California, find the fault and quote it before any work — about a week from pickup to return.
